Florida Blue, part of Blue Cross and Blue Shield, offers some level of addiction treatment coverage for policyholders.

Federal mandates require that many Florida insurance plans cover addiction treatment costs, at least to an extent. The plans are often required to provide equal benefits for mental health care and addiction treatment as they do for medical care. Florida Blue is an insurer that works with the New Direction network to make addiction treatment services more accessible to people throughout Florida. The Recovery Village at Baptist Health is one of the leading rehabs that take Florida Blue.

Florida Blue (Blue Cross Blue Shield of Florida) Overview

Florida Blue is an independent subsidiary of the national Blue Cross Blue Shield Association. It’s one of Florida’s top health insurance providers, with over five million members statewide. Blue Cross Blue Shield, or BCBS, is one the country’s largest insurance providers, with coverage extending to one in three residents of America. In Florida, Blue Cross Blue Shield Insurance operates as Florida Blue.

Does BCBS Insurance Cover Substance Abuse Treatment?

Florida Blue plans provide coverage for addiction treatment in most cases. The federal mandates that play a role in insurers covering addiction treatment include the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act as well as the Affordable Care Act. These regulations mean most insurers will provide, to some degree, coverage for services to treat addiction.

What Types of Drug & Alcohol Rehab Are Covered by BCBS of Florida Health Insurance?

Different types of rehab programs and levels of care are available if you’re seeking addiction treatment. The treatment plan that will be best for you depends on your needs as an individual. The types of services for addiction treatment that may be covered by Florida Blue insurance include:

    • Medical detox
    • An inpatient program (also known as residential rehab)
    • Partial hospitalization programs (PHPs)
    • Outpatient treatment, including intensive outpatient programs (IOPs)
    • Medication-assisted treatments

If you go in-network, your insurance through Florida Blue should offer coverage for at least some of your treatment services. The specific coverage amount will depend on your plan. You may have to pay out-of-pocket expenses that come with treatment even when it’s covered.

How Do I Use Florida Blue Health Insurance to Pay for Rehab?

If you have Florida Blue, you need to find a rehab center in-network with the company. An in-network provider will work directly with the insurance company, reducing your out-of-pocket expenses.

If you want to use Florida Blue for rehab, a good starting point is to contact one of our Recovery Advocates. They can do a quick insurance verification while you’re on the phone. You can also complete our insurance verification information online, and we’ll let you know about the details of your coverage.

Another option is to contact Florida Blue directly, and they can give you specifics of your coverage, tell you what to expect as far as out-of-pocket costs and point you toward in-network rehab centers.

What If My BCBS Insurance Plan Only Covers Part of My Addiction Treatment?

Even though insurers like Florida Blue usually offer addiction and mental health care coverage, you may have to pay co-insurance costs or cover the costs until you’ve met your deductible.

If you have to pay out-of-pocket expenses, there are different options, including payment plans. Our Recovery Advocates can help you with this process.

Treatment is life-saving, and the expenses associated with untreated addiction can be much higher than rehab costs.
